Every Sunday night I try to participate in a Twitter chat called #nbtchat or No Box Thinking chat. It is a chat comprised of educators and leaders in education from all around the country and sometimes world. @jonathankegler and @JennGRoach are a few of the brains behind the chat and they've been bringing it to us since Spring of 2014. Tonight I was able to participate in the chat and let me know tell you, that I'm ready to "burn" many things related to education (i.e. homework, rows of desks, boring classrooms...).
In my opinion teachers have become a group of people who just do what they're told, they don't question why. Dare I say it...a bunch of WIMPS! This doesn't sit well with me. We are educating children who will be living in a completely different world in 10-15 years; therefore we cannot educate our children in ten same way. I'm tired of the excuse, "well that's just the way we've been doing it." WHAT! We need to press the envelope and challenge what and why we do things. How can we educate fully is we are just doormats?!
Our students depend on us to bring them information and allow them to explore and learn. We need to be on the cutting edge and press the envelope. We need to create a safe environment that allows for mistakes and growth. We need to allow the 21st century skills to permeate our walls...see graphic.
Our future depends on our actions today. Are we going to sit idly by and watch opportunities pass us by or jump outside of our "box" and become a trailblazer? I know what and who I want to be...do you?
