Explain: What does a good mentor "do"?
According to Merriam-Webster, a mentor is someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger person.
According to Melissa Eddington, a mentor is someone who guides and facilitates learning while the one being mentored takes notes and asks questions to further the learning.
I have been a mentor to a few new teachers...the questions are numerous and unknown at times. I will only answer questions if asked to answer and will watch from a distance. I don't want to be a hoverer or be so overbearing that they are afraid to take risks. We need to experience failure so we can learn and adjust.
A mentor is to be their educational support and emotional support as they go through their first years of teaching. Be their listener and sounding board. Be their support and confidant. I love the mentor role and thrive on helping others.
