The Labor Day weekend started off well with a visit to Bradley HS for their first football game of the school year. Because my husband is one of the Athletic Trainers, we are honored to be given three free tickets to all home games, reserved seats and a free reserved parking pass. I brought our son to "watch" the game; therefore we only stayed still halftime.
The next day we headed out to enjoy a park but first my son wanted to stop at the new Speedway to get something to eat...actually just wanted a slushy. We are in the car ready to go and my car won't start...well about an hour later, I had a new battery thanks to my husband. Not part of the plans, but glad I have a car and have the money to pay for the $130 battery.
Our friend Kelly, who's living with us, was also blessed with a car this past Friday. My husband wrote letters to friends asking for donations and we were able to gather up $2200. She bought a "new" Altima for her driving enjoyment. She has found new freedom with a purchase of a car. Today my husband hit the junk yard and got her some needed parts to make her car even better.
We do this all the time...we buy new "parts" to make things better. Do the old "parts" need replaced or do we just want better? What if we lived with the idea that what we have is good enough? What if we feel we need to replace things all the time? Will we ever be happy? Will we just keep buying things? Then you're led to the age old question...can money buy happiness?
I try to think and believe that what I have is good enough and that I'm blessed to have what I have. It's hard when people around me and you are always buying bigger and better. We need to keep up with the Jones'. According to Madonna, we live in a material world, and I'm trying not to be a material girl.
